Plot
“Luther: The Fallen Sun,” a feature-length sequel of the BBC crime drama (in theatres this week and streaming on Netflix March 10), moves the online furor over his fan-casting to a part that’s already, famously, his: role that’s just as crazy as the one his fans wanted him to play.
Detective Chief Inspector John Luther is a rogue cop who looks into London’s most gruesome murders. Elba has created a hero that will last for a long time. His long wool jacket and moral guide are classic and fit him well. Luther was modeled after both Columbo and Sherlock Holmes. He squinted and walked slowly through horrible crime scenes with his hands in his pockets. Elba’s unpredictable screen presence, with its rumpled gravity and movie-star smolder, gives the character something extra.

Elba, who played Luther in the TV show, and Dermot Crowley, who played Martin Schenk, are both in the movie.
Andy Serkis, who was in The Batman, plays the film’s villain, David Robey, a tech billionaire who uses monitoring technology to control and kill people. Cynthia Erivo, who was in Pinocchio, plays Odette Raine, a rival detective who is Luther’s enemy.
